All the bright, precious things fade so fast. And they don't come back.

It was also that night... that I became aware of Gatsby's extraordinary gift for hope. A gift that I have never found in any other person. And which it is not likely I shall ever find again.

I remembered how we had all come to Gatsby's and guessed at his corruption...while he stood before us...concealing...an incorruptible dream.

He had come such a long way. And his dream must have seemed so close... that he could hardly fail to grasp it. But he did not know that it was already behind him.

"Open another window."
"There aren't any more."
"Then telephone...for an ax."

I knew it was a great mistake for a man like me to fall in love. I'm only 32. I might still be a great man if I could forget that I once lost Daisy.

A breathless warmth flowed from her. A promise that there was no one else in the world she so wanted to see.

They’re a rotten crowd. You’re worth the whole damn bunch put together.

And I asked the nurse if it was a boy or a girl. And she said it was a girl...and I wept:"I'm glad it's a girl." And I hope she'll be a fool. That's the best thing a girl in this world can be. A beautiful little fool.

Alone and embarrassed... I decided to get roaring...drunk.

Life is something you dominate.

He threw all those parties hoping she'd wander in one night.

I'll make you a drink, Tom. Then you won't seem so stupid to yourself.

Five lost years struggled on Daisy's lips. But all she could manage was:
"I've never seen such beautiful shirts before."

And I mean everyone from every walk of life...from every corner of New York City...this kaleidoscopic. ... Carnival...spilled...through Gatsby's door.
