— What exactly did he put into the chest?

— Literally or figuratively?
— He couldn't literally put his heart in a chest.
— Could he?
— It was not worth feeling what small, fleeting joy life brings. And so him carve out him heart, lock it away in a chest and hide the chest from the world. The key he keep with him at all times.

Well, he plays things close to the vest now. And a hard-learned lesson it was. Three days out on the venture, the first mate comes to him and says everything's an equal share, that should mean the location of the treasure too. So Jack gives up the bearings. That night there was a mutiny. They marooned Jack on an island and left him to die. But not before he'd gone mad with the heat.

— Aye, the Pelegostos made Jack their chief, but he only remains chief as long as he acts like a chief.
— So he had no choice. He's a captive as much as the rest of us.
— Worse, as it turns out. See, the Pelegostos believe that Jack is a god in human form, and they intend to do him the honour of releasing him from his fleshy prison. They'll roast him and eat him.
