You know, at first, all I could think about was how big of a risk it was. How her turning out to be like her father would hurt you or Josie or anyone else at the school. You know, but then I just started seeing it another way. I figured if you both turned out as well as you have in spite of being raised by me... so could she. You know, I saw a world where the three of you became friends. Family. The kind that would do anything for each other, you know, in case something happened to your mother or me. You know, uh... she would protect you and you would protect her, you know, in case I got myself killed. Or worse... let you down.

Now that we know the rules of the game, we know how to cheat.

I am the adult. And sometimes that means telling kids like you... things like this. We don't need you, Hope. But we do want you here because we believe that you're still in there... somewhere.

— Call me paranoid, but I'm still waiting for the other shoe to drop.
— Unless there's not another shoe.
— There's always another shoe.

— What are you doing?
— Looking for a drink. There's only so much rah-rah camaraderie I can handle. Brings out a side of me I'm not exactly a big fan of. Hence, something to make team building a little bit more bearable.

In my experience, if something's worth fighting for, there's always a chance that you'll win.

Well, this is a first. Never been called into my own office before.

I know this isn't gonna be easy for you. You've experienced more loss than anyone your age should ever have to. I've lost people I've loved in every way imaginable. Long and drawn out. Sudden, unexpected. None of them are good. But I can tell you what the worst is. It's when you have regret. When you were unable to... say the things that you needed to say. You can't control the rest. But you can make the most out of the time you have left together.
