The Mountain Between Us by Charles Martin

I live by a couple simple rules. One of those is that I stick to what I'm good at and I give people credit at sticking to what they're good at.

All of us spend our days looking through lenses that are smudged, fogged up, scratched, and some broken. But this herethis pulls you out from behind the lenses and for a few brief seconds gives you 20/20 vision.

We have to look at very bad situations and find ways to make them better. Every day is a chess match. Us against evil. Most days we win. Some days we don't. And we do all of this because of one word. Hope. It circulates in our veins. It's what fuels us.

If the worst is a possibility, then you keep it on the table. Don't hide from it. Don't run. It can happen. And if and when it does, you need to have thought about it ahead of time. That way you're not crushed when your worst thought becomes your reality.

Persistence, Resilience

One of the things I've learned both in medicine and climbing mountains is that you attack one crisis at a time.

If ever an animal had a Napoleon complex, it's him. He's got the attitude of an angry bullmastiff shoved into a package the size of a loaf of bread. He's the poster dog for 'it's not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog.

I learned how to run within myself, monitoring and gauging output and speed. Fear does that.
